Tomorrow’s pencilled in to be a big Nokia day, the much rumoured new Nseries phones, the N71 and N80 are widely expected to take their bow at Nokia’s Mobility Conference 2005 in Barcelona, but guess what I spotted when I tried the obvious urls for these phones at nokia.com?
The obvious url for the Nseries phones has been like http://www.nokia.com/n70 and last week http://www.nokia.com/n71 and http://www.nokia.com/n80 gave you a page that said “sorry, wrong url”, today they’re redirecting to the Nseries page, along with this url http://www.nokia.com/n92!
So what is the Nokia N92? That’s a good question, although there’s been rumours of a flash memory based varient of the N91 for a little while.
Look at how much more appealing Apple’s iPod Nano is over the iPod mini, apply that logic and physical bulk reduction to the N91 and you’ve got a sweet little device. Does an MP3 player need to be bulky? Not really, the Nano’s proved that, and with 4GB of flash storage being no bigger than a postage stamp the only real missing part on a phone is a set of dedicated controls for music playback, you’ve already got a high res colour screen, headphone and usb connectors. Maybe the modal controls approach of the Nokia 3250 isn’t such a silly idea after all.
Update: Ok, so I was a little wrong on the N92, it’s not a flash based music player, but something even madder, a (DVB-H) TV capable mobile phone. I know Nokia have made plenty of noises about DVB-H in the past, but this looks very exciting, and makes the video capabilities of the latest iPod look even more so-so.
