Straw Poll

See below for historic detail, in summary I've loosely restricted the ability to edit this wiki, read Wiki Usage for further details.

----

Whilst I want to keep this wiki open for everyone to contribute, the only recent contributors have been myself and a bunch of wiki spammers; in view of this I'm considering closing the wiki off so that only I can enter content.

So here's a quick straw poll on the future of this wiki, if you want me to keep it open place a comment below. I'll be making my decision on this around the 20th March 2005, so vote early, vote often! Jim Hughes 2005-03-04

Gustaf Erikson 2005-03-04: as far as I'm concerned, I find semi-personal wikis pretty pointless to have open for public comment. Post a prominent Contact link instead, and include any worthwile additions submitted there.

Comment and wiki spammers have truly destroyed a great resource, but that's not your fault. Keep your stress levels low by cutting out the spammers.

Matt Croydon 2005-03-04: Viagra viagra viagra! Is there any way to require registration or that someone log in before posting? I think that's a good compromise between public and private and should cut down on a fair amount of spam. Wiki spam sucks.

Jim Hughes 2005-03-07: My initial thoughts are heading towards using http auth (with the username and password published on this wiki), and perhaps ip based authorisation for known good addresses too. This will be for editing pages only, as blocking people from reading the content seems a little counter-productive...

Jim Hughes 2005-03-08: I'm seeing a fair number of people fom France visiting this wiki, I can write tolerable French and I know sufficient Francophones to polish this into good French, is there any demand for French content? German is also an available option if so desired. Vote below please!

Jim Hughes 2005-05-26: Ok, better late than never, the results are that I'm loosely locking the wiki up. As before, some ip addresses will be banned full-stop (generally wiki and referrer spammers, and those that appear on various rbl's. In addition posting will be restricted to a handful of known good contributors (let me know your ip if you're interested), and to those who're smart enough to read Wiki Usage to obtain access details.
